I recall an incident when cheap cigarettes were part of naval life and mess decks seemed to adopt that nicotine yellow colour. Following a ‘run-ashore’ and one too many beers, a friendly discussion ensued between 2 vocal mess members. It went along the lines that both, being strong personalities, could easily stop smoking if they wanted to. The issue was banded back and forth before someone in the mess, tired of being kept awake, suggested they prove it; a bet was made. The person who ‘cracked’ first would buy the other a crate of beer! A last smoke was had and finally we were all able to get our heads down.
The next morning each of the participants were reminded of their previous night’s agreement; they both reaffirmed their determination to become non-smokers. The morning progressed, stand-easy negotiated with slight tremors and short tempered outbursts. Later in the forenoon taunts were met with angry denials of any difficulty. Lunchtime passed with growing anxiety, visible shaking, whispers between the two were reportedly heard… were they about to call the bet off? Toward the end of the first ‘dog watch’ one of them was to be found in the mess, fag in mouth, crate of beer in the fridge! He ‘needed’ a smoke!
Have you experienced similar difficulty trying to become a non-smoker? Many years later the evidence is much clearer, yet still people continue to smoke, potentially damaging their bodies in so many ways.
Whether you smoke to nurture yourself, relieve stress, provide an excuse for a break or even to suppress your appetite hypnotherapy can help you. If you are willing to rely on your powerful subconscious you can find alternatives to smoking that will genuinely be desirable.
