What is hypnotherapy?
An example of a trance like state is when someone may be driving along a clear or known stretch of road. The conscious mind does not need to ‘think’ about having to drive; the skills have become automatic. This allows the conscious mind to be ‘free’ which in turn allows the subconscious mind to become more active. The person becomes so engrossed in their thoughts that when they have to come back into a more conscious state, maybe as the road becomes busier and an action is required, they may not be able to recall landmarks passed along the stretch of road or indeed whether they actually travelled the road.
This phenomenon is commonly known as a daydream, but in essence it’s a trance like state similar to a hypnotic state. These states are commonplace in everyday life; reading a book and forgetting what you have just read is another example as is watching the television and not being able to recall what you have just watched. These trance like states are a period when the subconscious is set free or allowed to become more active. When induced by a hypnotherapist they can be used for the purpose of treating a specific area of need and this process is known as hypnotherapy.
